  • Pizza folly and the Gospel

    Becky Kew|Updated Mar 16, 2018

Canadian news featured a story in February about a Domino's pizza delivery man. While he was in an elevator, taking an order of pizza for the purchasers' enjoyment, he apparently didn't realize video cameras were on. Surveillance caught him squatting on the floor, opening the box and helping himself to the toppings! As he reached his destination, he quickly shut the box, returned the pizza box to the thermos bag and moved on to deliver the pizza, as if all were well! Domino's...

  • Healing the Heart Through Correction

    Parry Stelter|Updated Jan 4, 2018

Second Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV) in God’s holy book tells us, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Being challenged to change our behavior is difficult for all of us; especially for those of us who have a problem with any sort of authority. Whether it’s someone telling us how we can improve at work, or whether it is a f...

  • Big Hairy Deal

    Phil Callaway|Updated Jan 4, 2018

Have you ever complained? My daughter worked as a server, so she knows a little about complaints. Here are a few grievances aired in eateries. I think it's important to tell you that I am not making any of these up. • "I'm sending the fish back. It was staring at me." • "The plate color clashes with my food. It's too ugly to Instagram." • "This cup is right-handed. I'm left handed." • "The ice was too cold. It should have been left out for a few minutes." • "I'm sending the ch...

  • A New Year Can Bring New Things!

    Becky Kew|Updated Jan 4, 2018

Once again we find ourselves in a new year! It’s amazing to think that we are living approximately 2018 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s Son! God’s Word contains several scriptures about new things that I have really enjoyed. I hope you do too: The Lord Jesus spoke of a new commandment in the book of John that we are to love one another even as He has loved us. What a commandment! Up until this time the law demanded a behavior system of people givi...

  • Happy New Year-Indian Style

    Crying Wind|Updated Jan 4, 2018

Every year I celebrate the Kickapoo New Year. It comes randomly on a different date every year so my family and friends never know when they'll get a call from me saying, "Happy New Year!" The Kickapoo New Year begins when you hear the first thunder in the Spring (usually in February), but only if the ground has thawed enough that you can stick your finger into it up to the first knuckle. If the ground hasn't thawed, you have to wait for the next thunder. In the old days, the...

  • Look at Who I Am

    Sue Carlisle|Updated Jan 4, 2018

Do you ever regret choices you've made? Do you wonder if God exists, and, if so, why you are in such a mess? Has a self-proclaimed Christian ever seriously wounded you or led you astray? I don't know a single person who has experienced a perfect life without heartaches of one sort or another-painful physical or environmental circumstances, hurtful actions from other people or regrets over their own choices-but my life crashed in 1990 when I discovered my husband and I had...

    Updated Jan 4, 2018

Wise spiritual warriors, young and old, study the words given to us by Creator God. If you'd like to read all the way through the Bible this year, cut out this bookmark and keep it in your Bible, marking off the books you've read....

  • What The Dog Left Behind

    Adrian G. Torres|Updated Jan 4, 2018

A knot formed in my stomach. I had nowhere to go, so I just turned around and faced the back of the cage. I knew he could see me, but I was too embarrassed to face him. Ad Seg (the Hole) is where the worst of the worst are sent. About 98% of the men that are in the Hole are here because they did something very bad. The Hole is the jail inside the prison. It's a true shame to be a resident of the Hole. It's a surprise to those who see me there, who know my character. Since the...

  • Healing the heart through sufferings

    Parry Stelter|Updated Nov 16, 2017

In God's love letter to us, in the ancient holy book called the Bible, we see our spiritual ancestor Paul talking about sufferings. We usually want to avoid sufferings and either pretend they don't exist, or try to act like everything is fine. Yet, when we acknowledge our sufferings for what they are, and what sufferings are intended to do for us, it changes our whole perspective on sufferings. One of our ancient spiritual advisors once said, in a letter he wrote to the...

  • Earthquakes in December

    Becky Kew|Updated Nov 16, 2017

In December, 2001, I was in a 7.6 earthquake in El Salvador. Many people died all around me. Thankfully; I was not inside a building but was outside in the country and did not have to fear being crushed by falling objects. For weeks afterwards, people lived in the streets under makeshift tents because of the tremors. Watching them survive such a catastrophe was a life-changing experience. They knew to have a plan for such an event-a solid foundation was a must and they had to...

  • The Zoo Cage Prophet

    Updated Nov 16, 2017

Magical! A prism of color exploded, and now danced with glee. The once beat-down and filthy had been awakened, lifted, cleansed and polished. What was being choked, causing a slow death, was now free from Hades' grip. The party that spontaneously erupted was much needed. Magical, I tell you; it was pure magic. Landing in the Administrative Segregation Unity (aka the hole) means also not having all the luxury items to which you have become accustomed in the other units. As a...

  • Christmas in Chaos

    Sue Carlisle|Updated Nov 16, 2017

Brightly-lit trees, merry songs and glitzy packages seem like noisy intruders into a world whipped apart by hurricanes, crumbled by earthquakes, scorched by wildfires and wounded by mad shooters. How can we possibly celebrate a festive holiday amidst such loss? There is only one answer: Christ. I go back to the basics when my faith feels challenged. Genesis 1 and John 1 reveal the reason why all those hurting can celebrate Christmas. Jesus not only created the world, He died...

  • Giving our best at Christmas

    Crying Wind|Updated Nov 16, 2017

I was excited. I was going to have a Christmas party for the first time in years. I'd invited six ladies in my church, and I'd bought a gift and a beautiful candle for each of them. I'd also prepared a special lunch and a fancy dessert. I decorated the house and had candles burning and carols playing. I'd also bought six poinsettia plants to decorate the living room, and I planned to give a poinsettia to each lady when she left so she could enjoy it at home. I'd been planning...

  • Soaring Above

    K.B. Schaller|Updated Nov 16, 2017

Born in Atlanta, Texas, in 1893, Elizabeth (Bessie) Coleman was the 10th of 13 children. Her parents, George (Cherokee heritage) and Susan Coleman (African-American heritage) were sharecroppers. When she was two years old, the family moved to Waxahachie, Texas, and lived there until Bessie was 23 years old. Her father left Texas where he found the racial climate unbearable for people of color and returned to Oklahoma-known then as Indian Country-where he hoped to find better o...

  • Laugh Again

    Updated Nov 16, 2017

How much do you know about Christmas? Here's a chance to find out. Circle your best guess, check your answers, then impress your friends. 1) Which is the name of one of Santa's reindeer? A. Rudolph. B. Olive. You're right either way. Rudolph is correct. But if you guessed Olive, you must remember singing, "Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names." At least, I think that's how it goes. Don't you wish tests were this easy in high school? Prance on down to...

  • Broken Bear becomes Awesome Bear

Ruth Kathleen Laughing Water Smith|Updated Oct 5, 2017

I was working for a summer camp as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) pool lifeguard one summer when I was given Broken Bear. I do not know his real name and only know very little about him so I have given him the name Broken Bear. Broken Bear was a Native American about eight years old when I met him. He had Cerebral Palsy, and his parents took him to the hospital and left him there when he was an infant. They never came to visit him, so he became a ward of the state. He was in...

  • Passport Plight

    Becky Kew|Updated Oct 5, 2017

My Canadian passport expired in July of this year. I picked up a form to reapply and hurriedly sat down to fill out the necessary information. I was about to fold the application and slide it into the envelope when I noticed the box that had my signature had a small statement underneath directing that the signature had to be contained within the box. My signature wasn't. The letter "y" in my name was outside of the perimeter. Sighing, I realized that I had to pick up another...

  • You Big Baby

    Phil Callaway|Updated Oct 5, 2017

A short time ago, after a short courtship our son was married. “The time is short,” he said. “We’re thirty.” So he married Dallas, a short girl. Actually, she’s not short at all. She’s a world-record holding power lifter. That’s right. She carried our son over the threshold. I, on the other hand, am not built for lifting large objects. In ninth grade I lay on my back, hoisting barbells straight up above my face, and somehow the whole contraption got away and fell on me. I’m...

  • The Second Arrow

    Crying Wind|Updated Oct 5, 2017

The Second Arrow By Crying Wind My neighbor Charlie enjoys archery and has a target set up in his back yard. Sometimes I watch him shooting arrows at balloons or apples or even pumpkins. He's a very good archer but sometimes even Charlie misses the target and an arrow will end up sticking in the side of his garage. One day when I was standing behind him watching him shoot at empty cans on a bench, the first arrow went straight through a can but the second arrow glanced off...

  • Love won

    Sue Carlisle|Updated Oct 5, 2017

Our close friend, Glenn, died in a car accident a few weeks ago. We met him when we were older and wiser 20-year-olds and he was only 18. We would have celebrated a 50-year friendship this coming December. We reared our children together, and we also went through the same abusive church leadership situation for over 20 years. I didn’t talk much about our church situation in my book, Walking with the Creator Along the Narrow Road, published by Indian Life Books, because I didn...

  • Healing the Heart through Working

    Parry Stelter|Updated Oct 5, 2017

One of our spiritual ancestors named Paul wrote in the holy book called the Bible some wisdom on how to approach the work that we do in this life. There are different categories of work that we all do as we journey in this life on this earth-that the Creator, Jesus, gave us to do. There are also different types of relationships that we have with each other as we journey through our lives. We have relationships with our spouses and children, and we have relationships with our a...

  • Buttongate

    Adrian G. Torres|Updated Oct 5, 2017

They had traveled for miles early in the morning, in wet weather, just to visit me. Everything had gone as planned so far . . . until . . . until they faced an ugly evil villain who stands tall and proud at the entrance of the visitor processing center. He is known by many names, but he is best known as Metal Detector. To visit me-or any other inmate-a person must go through a series of security procedures. Some are simple, others a bit bothersome, yet all necessary. Walking...

  • A Furry Savior

    Becky Kew|Updated Jul 15, 2017

I was walking my dog Rd on a gorgeous afternoon. My neighbor was outside doing some yard work, so Rd and I crossed the road to say hi. As we were visiting, Rd stretched out the leash that I was holding and sat on the grass to watch my neighbor's cat. They were both watching each other intently and neither one was making a move; we kind of laughed and wondered if they were making friends. About ten minutes later, a much younger dog came trotting down the road and wandered into...

  • Laugh Again

    Phil Callaway|Updated Jul 15, 2017

Cathy decided to meet her friend Jane after not seeing her for several months. When they met, Cathy exclaimed: “Jane! How did you lose all that weight?” Jane replied: “It’s my husband. He never washes his dishes, he leaves his dirty laundry everywhere, his work papers are all over the place, and each night I run around the house cleaning up after him.” “That’s horrible!” Cathy said. “You should confront him.” “Oh I will,” answered Jane. “In six more pounds!” Maybe you’d like...
