What if the Bible is true? That question runs through my mind constantly as I listen and watch the world around me, and in the age of technology, that is quite a large world. I can’t get away from the question.
There is an actual pain near my heart as I listen to the news media and watch the entertainment industry proclaim values different from God’s Word. I hear the Deceiver’s voice as they proclaim a false love for God and humanity.
I picture a large rowboat filled with people confidently floating down the river headed for Niagara Falls, while crowds of people shout from the bank, “You will be fine; we love you.”
What kind of love is that?
What if the first two chapters of Romans are true? Is this really our Creator’s opinion? If so, then we all need to take heed. I don’t usually write articles like this, but I feel like one on the riverbank crying out to the boaters to change their direction before disaster destroys them. The Scriptures are full of warnings; the chapters of Galatians 5, Ephesians 5, Colossians 3, and Revelation 22 are only a few.
What will our lives look like in 2014? Whom will we choose to follow? We cannot determine the weather, the economy, political foreign policy or national security, but each one of us can choose between lies and truth for our own lives. We can choose to love God and obey His Word or we can float down the stream of society’s cultural norms.
Jesus urged His followers to “enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).
Again, I ask, what if the Bible is true? Look at a NASA or Hubble website and then ask yourself this question: Can the One who made all of this really have come to earth to redeem us so that we could live in a kingdom of light with Him instead of a world of darkness with His enemy? Can the first chapter of Colossians possibly be true? Can the world really be waiting in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed like Romans 8 proclaims? Can God really be for us? If so, who can possibly be against us? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us (Romans 8:34b).
Like Paul prayed for the Ephesians, I pray for all of us (because I need Him also) that “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give [us] the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that [we] may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of [our] heart[s] may be enlightened in order that [we] may know the hope to which he has called [us], the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
