A Way of Escape

Series: Editorial Viewpoint | Story 9

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV

William was a believer who was struggling with some leftovers from the life he lived before he got serious about following Jesus. He'd spent the last of his money on a bag of weed; now, he was hitchhiking down the Yellowhead four-lane with that in his jacket.

God's Spirit had been dealing with him on this drug-use issue and Will was starting to listen; finally, he dug out the bag, threw it as far as he could into the ditch, and went back to keep thumbing. Then the thoughts started coming, "Why did I do that? . . . That was good Columbian! . . . I should go get that bag!"

He struggled with this for about half an hour, then slowly turned and started walking back to the ditch. Just as he took a few steps toward where he'd thrown the bag, a semi pulled over to pick him up. Climbing up into the cab, he laughed as the truth of 1 Corinthians 10:13 kicked in and he realized what it meant that God would "make a way of escape" to help him handle the temptations he faced. He sent up a short prayer of thanks as the driver revved up his diesel & pulled back onto the road; it was a huge first step toward victory!

You and I may not struggle with what William was battling, but every one of us has areas that we need God's extra help on-things we can't deal with on our own. It's really good to know that God will always provide a way for us to handle temptation. It's up to us to look for and find that escape route!
